NUTRITION ADVICE DURING COVID-19

November 11, 2020by Olayinka Jones0

As countries are taking stronger measures to contain the spread of COVID-19, self-quarantine and the temporary closing of businesses may affect normal food-related practices.

People living with chronic illnesses that are suspected or confirmed COVID-19 patients may need support with their daily mental health and diet to ensure they keep in good health.

People are expressing more angst and fear, and looking to find ways to cope with the pandemic and the “new normal.” Proper nutrition and hydration are vital. The big question is how do we get proper nutrition?

We can get this from a balanced diet which includes foods from five groups and fulfills all of a person’s nutritional needs. People who eat a well-balanced diet tend to be healthier with stronger immune systems and lower risk of chronic illnesses and infectious diseases.

So, you should eat a variety of fresh and unprocessed foods every day to get the vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre, protein and antioxidants your body needs.

Eat fresh and unprocessed foods every day

Eat fruits, vegetables, legumes (e.g. lentils, beans), nuts and whole grains (e.g. unprocessed maize, millet, oats, wheat, brown rice or starchy tubers or roots such as potato, yam, taro or cassava), and foods from animal sources (e.g. meat, fish, eggs and milk).

Drink enough water every day

Water is essential for life. It transports nutrients and compounds in blood, regulates your body temperature, gets rid of waste, and lubricates and cushions joints. Drink 8–10 cups of water every day.

Avoid eating out

Eat at home to reduce your rate of contact with other people and lower your chance of being exposed to COVID-19. We recommend maintaining a distance of at least 1 meter between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing. Lastly, regularly wash your hands and make sure surfaces are being cleaned and disinfected fast enough.

STAY SAFE!
